Bhubaneswar, January 12: Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Monday indicated that Odisha could see an increase of around 50 Assembly seats following the next delimitation exercise in the State. The number of Assembly seats has remained unchanged since the 1971 Census.

“The number of Assembly seats may increase by another 50. At present, there are 147 Assembly seats in the State, which could go up to 200. So, keeping this in mind, a new Assembly building will come up with a seating capacity for 300 members. The new Lok Seva Bhavan and the new Assembly building will be built on the Central Vista model,” said the Chief Minister.

The Chief Minister Majhi was speaking after laying the foundation stones for construction of a new, modern Lok Seva Bhavan and Assembly building, aiming to address safety concerns, space shortages, and future administrative needs.

According to reports, after the next census and delimitation exercise, constituency boundaries and seat numbers will be revised based on updated population data.

So, keeping future requirements in mind, the State Government has initiated effort to construct a future-ready Legislative Assembly building with expanded seating capacity.

The new Lok Seva Bhavan and the new Odisha Legislative Assembly building will be developed within a single integrated campus of over 71.13 acres of land at a cost of Rs 3,623 crore. The existing Lok Seva Bhavan is over 70 years old.
