Bhubaneswar, Jan 12: Ekamra MLA Babu Singh has once again issued a strict warning that obscene dances will not be allowed on Jatra pandals during the upcoming Khandagiri Mela, stating that the administration will enforce zero tolerance against such performances.

Referring to last year’s controversy, Babu Singh said that certain Jatra pandals at the Khandagiri Mela had come under criticism following allegations of obscene dance performances, which had triggered public outrage and strong reactions from social and cultural organisations. Following the incident, restrictions were imposed and the performances were stopped.

“The Khandagiri Mela is a matter of our identity and is deeply connected with the emotions of the people. It is a spiritual fair where sages and saints once performed penance. Based on this tradition, the mela has been organised every year from Magha Saptami,” he said.

Stressing the importance of maintaining the sanctity of the fair, the MLA said many sadhus and saints attend the mela, making it imperative that no form of obscene dance is permitted on the pandals. He added that similar to last year, strict guidelines will be enforced this year as well.

Babu Singh further stated that discussions have already been held with all mandap and Jatra committees in this regard. According to him, the committees have assured that no obscene performances will be staged during the mela. He urged all organisers to adhere strictly to the norms, reiterating that preserving the cultural and spiritual essence of the Khandagiri Mela is a collective responsibility.
