Bhubaneswar, April 28: In a significant breakthrough, the Kharvel Nagar Police arrested a notorious criminal and chain snatcher, identified as Sadiqul Islam alias Gandu, late last night in Odisha’s capital. The arrest came after the accused reportedly surrendered, fearing a possible police encounter.
Sources said, a woman was on her way to Khandia Park in Unit-3. The accused, riding a red Honda Activa without a number plate and wearing a black helmet, approached her and allegedly snatched her gold chain weighing 12 grams on April 22, 2025.
Following the incident, the victim lodged a formal complaint at the Kharvel Nagar Police Station. Based on the report, an investigation was launched to trace the accused.
Acting on a tip-off that Gandu was planning to sell the stolen gold chain at a throwaway price to an individual in Masjid Colony, the team set up a trap and intercepted the accused near Keshari Hotel in the Master Canteen area.
Though he initially attempted to flee, Sadiqul surrendered after being warned of possible forceful action. He was taken into custody without further incident.
The accused is currently being interrogated, and further legal proceedings are underway.
