Kamal Haasan Halts "Thug Life" Karnataka Release Over Language Row
Veteran actor Kamal Haasan has informed the Karnataka High Court that his much-anticipated film, "Thug Life," will not be released in the state for the time being. This decision follows a significant backlash over comments he made regarding the Kannada language, which he asserts were misunderstood and taken out of context. The actor expressed a desire for dialogue with the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) before any potential screening.
The controversy erupted after Haasan's remarks at the "Thug Life" audio launch event in Chennai. These statements were interpreted by some as suggesting that the Kannada language evolved from Tamil, leading to widespread criticism from pro-Kannada organizations and a call for an apology by the KFCC. The film body had initially threatened to boycott the movie in Karnataka if Haasan did not retract his comments.
In response to the escalating situation, Kamal Haasan's legal counsel conveyed to the High Court, "The petitioner at present is not for now willing to screen movie in Karnataka unless he would encourage a dialogue with Film Chamber of commerce." Consequently, the court has adjourned the hearing on the matter until June 10.
Haasan himself addressed the issue in a letter to the KFCC, expressing his regret that his words, intended to convey affection for the family of legendary Kannada actor Dr. Rajkumar, particularly Shiva Rajkumar (who attended the Chennai event), were misconstrued. He emphasized his genuine love for the Kannada language and its rich literary and cultural traditions, which he has long admired. "There is no dispute or debate on the rich legacy of Kannada language," Haasan stated, clarifying that his intention was to highlight the common linguistic roots and unity among Indian languages, not to diminish Kannada in any way.
The actor further articulated his deep respect for the people of Karnataka and their devotion to their mother tongue. "I have always stood for the equal dignity of all Indian languages and remain opposed to the dominance of any one language over another, as such imbalance undermines the linguistic fabric of the Union of India," he wrote. Haasan also expressed his regret for any embarrassment caused to Shiva Rajkumar due to the controversy, affirming that their mutual respect would endure and strengthen.
M Narasimhalu, President of the KFCC, has indicated that the film body will abide by the court's directives. An executive committee meeting planned by the KFCC to discuss the matter was postponed pending the High Court's hearing.
In his communication, Haasan underscored that cinema should act as a bridge between people, not a divisive wall. "This was the intent of my statement and I never have been nor would ever want to give any room for public unrest and animosity," he asserted. He conveyed his hope that the misunderstanding would be temporary and serve as an opportunity to reaffirm mutual love and respect between the linguistic communities.
The current impasse leaves the release of "Thug Life" in Karnataka uncertain, pending further dialogue and legal developments. Kamal Haasan remains hopeful that his clarification will be received in its intended spirit, allowing his enduring affection for Karnataka and its language to be recognised accurately.
