Bhubaneswar, Aug 8: Odisha Excise Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan on Thursday said that no more new liquor shops will be opened in the state.

Speaking to the media persons, Harichandan said that, “A decision has been made to stop issuing licenses for new liquor shops in the state. We will introduce a new excise policy next year, aiming for a comprehensive overhaul to bring clarity and ensure a strict ban on the illegal sale of liquor.”

Social Security Minister Nityananda Gond had noted that society is suffering due to alcohol addiction and said that the government would explore the feasibility of imposing prohibition in the state after consultations with the Excise and other relevant departments.

Earlier, there were speculations that the newly-elected BJP government was considering a gradual liquor ban in the state. However, the Excise Department denied any deliberation or plans to ban liquor at that time.
