No major cyclone ‘Murasu’ impact in Odisha, says Chief Secretary

Bhubaneswar, Nov 3: Odisha has reported no significant impact from Cyclone ‘Murasu’, with only light drizzles recorded in a few areas. The situation remains largely under control, officials said. However, as a precautionary measure, people in vulnerable areas have been evacuated, while control rooms are closely monitoring the situation.

Restoration and rehabilitation work is underway in Ganjam and Gajapati districts, which were affected by the earlier cyclone. Distribution of the relief package announced by the state government has also begun.

Rescue operations at landslide-hit locations, which were temporarily suspended due to rainfall, resumed on Tuesday morning.

An eight-member Central team is currently visiting Odisha to assess the damage caused by Cyclone ‘Arnab’ and the subsequent floods. The team will visit Gajapati district on Tuesday and Ganjam district on Wednesday to assess the extent of the damage. The visit will continue until the 4th of the month, covering various affected areas.

The Central team is being led by Ravi Shankar, Joint Secretary in the Union Ministry of Home Affairs. The Chief Secretary and other senior state government officials will accompany the team during its field visits.

The team will assess damage to agriculture, infrastructure, roads, electricity, water resources and other sectors caused by the cyclone and subsequent flooding. It will also review the ground situation, rescue operations and relief measures being undertaken in the affected districts.

Meanwhile, the Chief Secretary Anu Garg has reviewed the preparedness and prevailing situation related to Cyclone ‘Murasu’ through discussions with district collectors, the Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) and the Director General of Fire Services.

Following the review meeting, the Chief Secretary said that there had been no major impact of the cyclone in Odisha so far. He also confirmed that relief distribution and restoration activities were progressing in the affected districts.

The Central team's assessment is expected to help determine the extent of losses and the assistance required for rehabilitation and reconstruction in the cyclone-affected areas.
