Bhubaneswar, July 7: The Odisha Water Resources Department on Tuesday said there is currently no flood threat in the state, though officials are closely monitoring rising inflows into the Hirakud Dam and the Mahanadi river system.
Water Resource Department’s Sr. official said the Hirakud reservoir level stood at 606.12 feet with around 26% water storage. Nearly 1.8 lakh cusecs of water is flowing into the dam and the inflow is expected to increase to about 2.5 lakh cusecs due to rainfall in Chhattisgarh's upper catchment areas.
The department is considering opening two to three gates of the Hirakud Dam after reviewing the situation. At present, around 3.26 lakh cusecs of water is passing through Mundali barrage, which may rise to 4.5 lakh cusecs by Wednesday morning. Since the flow is expected to remain below 5 lakh cusecs, there is no flood situation, Rout said.
He added that the water level at Akhuapada remains below the warning mark, and the department continues to monitor rainfall, reservoir levels and river flows across Odisha.
