Strategic alliance targets massive military demand and local aerospace jobs

India is taking a massive leap toward self-reliance in the aerospace sector. Adani Defence Leonardo MoU was signed this Tuesday, marking a transformative step in domestic military production. This collaboration between Adani Defence & Aerospace and the Italian giant Leonardo aims to build a complete helicopter ecosystem within the country.

The partnership focuses on meeting the urgent needs of the Indian Armed Forces. Specifically, the venture will produce Leonardo’s renowned AW169M and AW109 TrekkerM helicopters. This is not just about assembly; the plan includes a phased approach to indigenization, ensuring that core components are made locally. Beyond manufacturing, the agreement covers essential maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) services, alongside comprehensive training for pilots.

Industry experts see this as a game-changer for the Aatmanirbhar Bharat mission. Jeet Adani, Director of Adani Defence & Aerospace, noted that this alliance combines global technical excellence with India’s growing industrial momentum. The goal is to establish India as a global powerhouse for aerospace technology.

The scale of this project is driven by massive demand. CEO Ashish Rajvanshi highlighted that the Indian military expects to require over 1,000 helicopters in the next ten years. By creating a sovereign manufacturing base, the partnership ensures that India is not dependent on foreign suppliers for long-term sustainment.

Gian Piero Cutillo of Leonardo expressed excitement about contributing to India’s rotorcraft industry. This move is expected to generate thousands of high-skilled jobs in engineering and logistics. While the immediate focus remains on military contracts, there is potential to expand into the civil aviation market in the future. This project firmly positions India as a competitive, world-class hub for the global aerospace supply chain.
