Rayagada, Dec 19: A woman doctor from Rayagada has fallen victim to a sophisticated cyber fraud, losing more than ₹12 lakh from her bank account after being subjected to a fake “digital arrest” by cybercriminals impersonating law enforcement officials.

According to reports, the fraudsters contacted the doctor, claiming that an order had been placed in her name and that her Aadhaar card was linked to it. She was later informed that a suspicious bag had arrived under her name and that serious criminal allegations were associated with it. The callers then claimed that the matter had been transferred to the police.

Posing as police personnel, the fraudsters threatened the doctor with arrest and warned her not to leave her house until the so-called verification process was completed. She was also told that failure to cooperate would lead to severe consequences. Under continuous pressure for nearly two days, the doctor was manipulated into transferring money, resulting in the loss of over ₹12 lakh.

The victim has been identified as Dr. Mamata Choudhury of Rayagada.

Following her complaint, the Rayagada police and the cyber cell have initiated an investigation into the incident. Rayagada IIC Prasanna Kumar Behera stated that no formal case has been registered yet, though preliminary inquiries are underway. Meanwhile, Dr. Mamata Choudhury has not made any statement to the media regarding the incident.
