Neeraj Chopra Splits with Coach Jan Zelezny: A New Chapter Begins
Two-time Olympic medalist Neeraj Chopra has officially announced the conclusion of his professional partnership with Czech coaching legend Jan Zelezny. The collaboration, which lasted for just one season, was a significant period in the Indian athlete's career, highlighted by his long-awaited achievement of breaching the 90-meter mark.
Although the formal coaching stint has ended, both parties expressed deep mutual respect. Chopra described the experience of training under his childhood idol as a "dream come true." According to the Haryana-born superstar, Zelezny provided him with a new "toolbox" of technical insights, rhythm adjustments, and fresh perspectives on the sport.
"Working with Jan opened my eyes to so many new ideas," Chopra stated. He emphasized that beyond the technical gains, he cherishes the friendship built with the world record holder, calling Zelezny one of the finest human beings he has ever met.
A Season of Highs and Lows
Zelezny, aged 59, reflected warmly on their time together. He noted that guiding Neeraj Chopra past the 90-meter barrier was a major highlight. However, he lamented that a back injury sustained just 12 days before the World Championships in Tokyo (2025) significantly impacted Chopra’s performance, resulting in an eighth-place finish. despite the injury setbacks, Zelezny believes Chopra holds immense potential for the future.
Looking Ahead to 2028
Moving forward, Neeraj Chopra plans to take charge of his own training regimen. He began his preparations in early November with a focus on staying healthy.
His sights are now firmly set on the future. "I’m especially looking ahead to the World Championships in 2027, and the big goal beyond that is the Olympic Games in 2028," Chopra added.
While they will no longer work together professionally, Zelezny confirmed they will remain in close contact, likely meeting at training camps or during family vacations in Europe or India.
