Bhubaneswar, Jan 21: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has directed the Odisha government to pay Rs 70,000 compensation to students of a Keonjhar-based school, who were injured due to collapse of roof-plaster in their classroom.
The NHRC passed the order on Friday acting on petitions filed by a human rights activist Advocate Radhakanta Tripathy.
The Commission has also asked the Odisha Chief Secretary to recover the compensation amount from the erring junior engineer who had not supervised the repair work properly and submit the receipt obtained from the victims.
Worth mentioning, the incident had taken place at Arjunbilla Primary School under Ghatagaon block in Keonjhar district in September 2023. As many as seven students including a boy and six girls had sustained critical injuries due to the debris fell on them.
