Bhubaneswar, July 9: A goods van on its way from Bhubaneswar towards Khordha got stuck on the newly constructed NH-16 flyover near Dumduma after a portion of the overpass caved in on Monday afternoon.
The right wheel of the empty van got stuck on the flyover due to formation of a sink. The driver and helper of the vehicle reportedly sustained minor injuries following the incident, said passerby.
The incident triggered panic among the commuters and led to traffic snarl on the stretch for a while.
The incident management team of NHAI rushed immediately to the spot and cordoned off the place to avoid any mishap after pulling out the van out of the hole. The NHAI immediately started repair work on the damaged portion of the flyover road in the evening.
The flyover was opened to public in February this year. It caved in due to poor quality of construction work, alleged Bhubaneswar mayor Sulochana Das.
However, NHAI clarified that such sink on road occasionally forms during rain due to use of flyash base which is normal.
Notably, President Droupadi Murmu’s carcade had passed the flyover hours before the incident.
