Nepal Foreign Affairs Minister expresses grief over death of Nepali student in Odisha

Bhubaneswar, May 2: Nepal’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Arzu Rana Deuba, has expressed sorrow over the tragic death of Prisha Shah, a Nepali student at a private University in Odisha, India.

 Prisha, who hailed from Birgunj, Nepal, was a B.Tech student, and her body was discovered in hostel room 111 on campus 4 of the university. The incident is currently under police investigation, and the exact cause of her death remains unconfirmed, though early reports suggest it may be a case of suspected suicide.

Minister Deuba, taking to her X (formerly Twitter) handle, offered prayers for Prisha’s soul and conveyed heartfelt condolences to her family. She further announced that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has initiated diplomatic efforts to uncover the truth behind the incident. These efforts are being coordinated with senior officials from the Government of India, the Government of Odisha, and the Nepali Embassy in Delhi.

In her statement, Deuba said: “The incident of Prisha Shah, a Nepali student studying at KIIT University in Odisha, India, being found dead in her hostel room has left us deeply saddened. I pray for the eternal peace of Prisha’s soul and express my deepest condolences to her family at this sad hour. Immediately after the incident, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs initiated diplomatic initiatives to investigate the truth through high-ranking officials of the Government of India, the Government of Odisha, and the Nepali Embassy in Delhi.”

The Odisha government also expressed grief and pledged full support to Prisha’s family. Authorities are working to determine the circumstances surrounding her death and are providing necessary assistance to the bereaved.

This tragic event follows a similar case in February, when another Nepali student reportedly died by suicide, in the same institution triggering protests and widespread concern among the student community.
