India Salutes Space Hero: Shubhanshu Shukla to Receive Ashok Chakra

Highest peacetime award honours historic ISS mission success

New Delhi/Bhubaneswar: India is preparing to bestow its highest peacetime gallantry award upon a trailblazer of the cosmos. Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, who etched his name in history as the first Indian to board the International Space Station (ISS), will receive the prestigious Ashok Chakra this Republic Day.

This honor recognizes his extraordinary service during the Axiom-4 mission in June 2025. As India’s second astronaut to travel to space, Group Captain Shukla spent 18 challenging days in orbit. His time aboard the ISS was not merely a visit but a rigorous scientific endeavor that has laid the groundwork for the nation's future in space.

Bridging Science and Bravery

While the Ashok Chakra is traditionally associated with battlefield courage, this year’s selection highlights a new frontier of service. Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla displayed immense mental fortitude and technical precision while conducting critical microgravity experiments. The data he gathered is now considered vital for the success of the upcoming Gaganyaan human spaceflight program.

His achievements have turned him into a beacon of inspiration for students and aspiring scientists across Odisha and the rest of India. His journey proves that the sky is no longer the limit for Indian talent.

A Milestone for Gaganyaan

Experts at the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) have noted that Shukla’s tenure on the ISS provided firsthand insights into long-duration space travel. This knowledge is essential for training future astronauts who will crew India’s own orbital vehicle. His successful collaboration with international agencies has also strengthened India's position as a serious global player in space exploration.

Republic Day Celebrations

The upcoming Republic Day parade will be a special moment for both the Indian Air Force and the scientific community. As Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla receives the Ashok Chakra, it symbolizes the perfect union of military discipline and scientific ambition.

From the high-pressure environment of the ISS to the ceremonial ramparts of Republic Day, Shukla’s journey stands as a testament to Indian excellence. His legacy will undoubtedly guide the nation as it moves toward establishing an independent space station in the coming years.
