Bhubaneswar, May 3: Former Chief Minister and BJD President Naveen Patnaik has strongly condemned the heinous attack on a youth, who was brutally assaulted and crushed under a vehicle in Kanas, Puri district. Patnaik described the incident as a grave failure of law and order in the state and urged the government to take immediate and serious action.
The shocking incident occurred on Saturday in the Golabazar area of Kanas, where the victim, identified as Illu Bharimal from Dokanda village, was attacked with a sharp weapon before being run over by a vehicle. Reports indicate that the youth was chased by at least three assailants who attacked him with a fish-cutting knife, locally known as a 'Paniki,' in the crowded fish market. This visual is widely circulated on social media.
Preliminary investigations suggest the attack may have been motivated by a prior enmity between the victim and the attackers. Both the victim and the assailants have a history of criminal activity, with Bharimal having six criminal cases registered against him across different police stations, and the attackers facing a total of ten cases.
The victim is currently in critical condition and is being treated at AIIMS Hospital in Bhubaneswar. The police have formed three special teams to apprehend the culprits, with raids underway at various locations.
