Puri, May 26: Snehasish Ganguly, elder brother of former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly, and his wife Arpita Ganguly narrowly escaped a serious mishap after a speedboat they were riding capsized in the Puri sea of Puri.
According to reports, the couple was part of a tourist group participating in water sports when the incident occurred.
Video footage from the scene shows the speedboat floating upside down in rough waters, while lifeguards hurried to rescue those on board. Rescue teams deployed rubber floats and safety gear to bring the tourists safely back to shore.
Arpita Ganguly, who was visibly distressed following the incident, blamed negligence on the part of the boat operators. She claimed the vessel had been rendered unstable because it was not operating at full passenger capacity.
“The sea was rough, and although the boat was designed to carry ten people, there were only three or four of us on board,” she explained. “This was the final ride of the day, and despite raising concerns, the operators insisted it was safe.”
She recounted that shortly after the boat set off into the sea, it was struck by a powerful wave and overturned.
“If the lifeguards hadn’t reached us in time, the outcome could have been disastrous,” she added. “I’m still shaken by the experience. I honestly believe the boat might not have capsized if it had been fully occupied.”
Arpita Ganguly has now called for stricter regulations on water sports activities along the Puri coast, citing the lack of adequate safety measures.
The incident has sparked concerns over the safety standards of recreational water activities in the popular tourist destination, prompting calls for government intervention and stricter oversight.
