Bhubaneswar, Oct. 24: A team of doctors at the Institute of Medical Sciences and SUM Hospital, Campus-2 at Phulnakhara, has achieved a breakthrough in healthcare by performing the first-of-its-kind hybrid procedure in Odisha to save the lives of a woman and her baby.

The woman, 30 weeks pregnant and diagnosed with the complex Placenta Increta Syndrome, was admitted into the hospital, after which a team of doctors drawn from departments of Interventional Radiology and Obstetrics and Gynecology decided to go ahead with the innovative hybrid procedure.

The procedure involved uterine artery embolization and lower segment cesarean section (LSCS) on the same table—a true hybrid approach.

The technique helped preserve the mother’s uterus for future pregnancies—an important achievement considering the fact that she had experienced two previous pregnancy losses and had no children.

In this case, the pregnancy involved an Intra-Uterine Growth Restriction (IUGR) baby, but both the mother and baby were doing well one week after the procedure.

The complex and challenging case was managed through close collaboration between the Interventional Radiology team, headed by Dr. Srikant Sundara, and the Obstetrics and Gynecology team led by Dr. Sunita Mishra.

This landmark case also marked the beginning of Interventional Radiology services at IMS and SUM Hospital, Campus-2. The hospital has been extending state-of-the-art minimally invasive ‘pinhole’ procedures, including neuro, stroke, and peripheral interventions led by Dr. Sundara’s team.
