Indian community gathers in large numbers to greet Prime Minister.

Chants of enthusiasm filled the air in Muscat on Wednesday as the Indian community turned out in force to welcome Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Touching down in the Omani capital for the final leg of his three-nation tour, PM Modi in Oman was greeted by a wave of national pride and emotion from expatriates living in the Gulf nation.

Upon his arrival, the Prime Minister was received by Oman’s Deputy Prime Minister for Defence Affairs, Sayyid Shihab bin Tariq Al Said, and was accorded a ceremonial guard of honour. This visit is particularly significant as it coincides with the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations.

Diaspora Enthusiasm and Odisha Connection

For many in the crowd, seeing the Indian leader was a dream come true. Neeru, hailing from Kutch, expressed her joy at seeing the Prime Minister up close for the first time.

Another community member, Rashmi, highlighted a special connection to Odisha. She recalled starting her year at the Indian Diaspora event in Odisha, where she first had the chance to see the PM. "I am very excited and feel very lucky to meet him here in Muscat as well," she shared, reflecting the deep bond the diaspora maintains with their homeland.

Focus on Trade and Strategic Ties

Beyond the cultural celebrations, serious business lies ahead. This trip marks Prime Minister Modi's second visit to the Gulf nation, undertaken at the invitation of Sultan Haitham bin Tarik. A major highlight of the agenda is the potential finalisation of the India-Oman CEPA (Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement).

Expectations are high regarding this India-Oman trade agreement, which recently received approval from the Union Cabinet. Arun Chatterjee, Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs, expressed optimism about the deal. He noted that teams from both sides have worked tirelessly to conclude negotiations that began in November 2023.

If signed, this agreement promises to open a new chapter in commercial relations, significantly boosting economic ties. During his two-day stay, Prime Minister Modi will hold extensive talks with Sultan Haitham bin Tarik to review the strategic partnership, covering sectors like defense, energy, and technology. He is also scheduled to address a larger gathering of the Indian diaspora in Muscat before concluding his visit.
