Small pets can now join owners inside airplane cabins

Air India is transforming the way Indians travel with their four-legged family members. The airline’s revamped Paws on Board programme introduces a massive shift in aviation rules, finally allowing small pets to stay by their owners' side during flights. This update is particularly relevant for pet parents in cities like Bhubaneswar, where more families are seeking hassle-free ways to relocate or vacation without leaving their companions behind.

New Weight Limits and Cabin Access

Under the refreshed Air India pet policy, cats and dogs weighing up to 10 kg—including the weight of their carrier—are now permitted to travel in the economy cabin. Previously, many small pets were forced into the cargo hold, causing significant stress for both the animals and their owners. Now, these small companions can fly right under the seat in front of you on over 80 domestic and international routes.

Faster Booking for Last-Minute Plans

Flexibility is a core part of this update. Air India has slashed the advance notice period for pet bookings from 72 hours down to just 48 hours. This change is a lifesaver for professionals or students who might need to move quickly for work or university intakes. While you still need to get your documents verified, the shorter window makes spontaneous travel much more feasible.

In-Flight Seating and Safety Rules

To ensure the comfort of all passengers, pet-friendly seating is restricted to aisle seats in the last row of the economy section. This allows the crew to monitor the animals effectively. Pets must be at least eight weeks old and healthy enough to fly. It is important to note that only soft-sided, leak-proof carriers (maximum 17×10×9 inches) are allowed in the cabin; hard crates are strictly for the cargo hold.

Understanding the Costs

The airline has standardized its fees to keep things transparent. For domestic flights, taking your pet in the cabin costs Rs 7,500. International rates vary between $140 and $160 depending on the distance. For pets heavier than 10 kg, they must travel as checked baggage or cargo, with domestic baggage fees starting at Rs 16,000.

This policy update aligns Air India with global standards, making the skies a lot more welcoming for the growing community of pet lovers across India.
