Mumbai, Sep 26: A Mumbai court has convicted Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut, sentencing him to 15 days of simple imprisonment in a defamation case brought by Kirit Somaiya's wife, Medha Somaiya.
The court subsequently suspended the sentence for 30 days and granted bail to Raut upon his request.
Judicial Magistrate Aarti Kulkarni found Raut guilty under Section 500 of the Indian Penal Code, which addresses defamation. In addition to the prison term, the court imposed a fine of Rs 25,000.
Following the ruling, Raut's lawyer filed two pleas seeking suspension of the sentence and bail, both of which were approved by the court.
Medha Somaiya, represented by advocate Vivekanand Gupta, alleged that Raut made unfounded and defamatory accusations against her and her husband.
She claimed that Raut accused them of being involved in a Rs 100 crore scam related to the construction and maintenance of public toilets managed by the Mira Bhayander Municipal Corporation.
