Bhubaneswar, Ap 10: Member of Parliament Aparajita Sarangi has urged the Odisha government to reconsider its decision to halt the proposed Bhubaneswar Metro Rail project, citing rising public demand and the city’s rapid urban expansion.

In a formal appeal to Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, Sarangi stressed the urgent need for a modern, efficient, and inclusive public transport system to address increasing traffic congestion in Bhubaneswar and its surrounding regions. She noted that the metro would provide a safe and accessible commuting option for all residents, including women, senior citizens, children, and persons with disabilities.

Highlighting the broader benefits, Sarangi said the metro project is not just a transportation initiative but a long-term investment in sustainable urban development. It could boost the local economy, create jobs, attract investments, and improve connectivity to major landmarks such as Lingaraj Temple, Dhauli, and ISKCON Temple, strengthening tourism and the city’s profile as a modern urban hub.

The MP also raised concerns about the financial implications of suspending the project, pointing out that approximately ₹274 crore has already been spent. Halting the project now could result in public fund losses and higher costs if construction resumes later.

Sarangi urged the state government to consider public sentiment and the long-term advantages of the metro system. She also expressed willingness to collaborate with the central government to secure additional support and funding.

The proposal to halt the Bhubaneswar Metro Rail has sparked widespread debate, with stakeholders advocating for its continuation as a key step toward building a future-ready, sustainable city.
