Monsoon rains in Himachal Pradesh claim 170 lives since June 20

Shimla, July 31: The relentless monsoon rains in Himachal Pradesh, which began on June 20, have claimed 170 lives so far and caused widespread disruption, severely impacting infrastructure.

According to a cumulative report from State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC), the ongoing monsoon season has resulted in 170 human fatalities so far. Of these, 94 deaths were caused by rain-related incidents such as landslides, flash floods, cloudbursts, and electrocution, while 76 people lost their lives in road accidents.

The SEOC further added a total of 301 roads remain blocked, 436 power distribution transformers (DTRs) are disrupted, and 254 water supply schemes have been affected as of 10:00 AM on July 31.

Mandi district has recorded the highest number of rain-related fatalities, with 21 deaths, followed by Kangra with 19 and Kullu with 10. 

The rain-induced destruction has also caused damage to over 400 homes, 1,627 cow sheds, and significant portions of public infrastructure, including roads, power lines, and water systems.

Earlier, the SEOC report indicated that the monsoon havoc has caused damage exceeding Rs 1,59,981 lakh to both public and private property. The destruction has affected 2,743 hectares of crops, damaged 680 homes, and resulted in the loss of over 22,900 livestock. 

Authorities are on high alert, with disaster response teams deployed in vulnerable areas for swift rescue and relief operations.
