Bhubaneswar, Jan 5: Nandankanan Zoological Park witnessed a massive footfall on the first Sunday of the New Year, with around 30,000 tourists visiting the popular wildlife destination on Sunday, January 4, 2026.

The surge in visitors was attributed to the weekend holiday, pleasant winter weather, and New Year celebrations. Families, students, and tourists from different parts of Odisha as well as neighboring states thronged the zoo from early morning hours.

Zoo authorities made special arrangements to manage the crowd, including additional ticket counters, increased deployment of security personnel, and crowd-control measures at major enclosures and the ropeway area. Battery-operated vehicles and water facilities were also kept ready for visitors’ convenience.

Despite the heavy rush, officials said the situation remained largely orderly. However, long queues were seen at popular enclosures such as the white tiger safari, lion safari, and reptile park.

Officials advised visitors to follow zoo guidelines, avoid littering, and cooperate with staff to ensure the safety of both animals and visitors. With tourist inflow remaining high during the New Year period, authorities expect similar crowds in the coming days as well.
