Met Department forecasts rain during Durga Puja celebrations

Bhubaneswar, September 21: The Meteorological Department has issued a forecast predicting rainfall during the upcoming Durga Puja, with a chance of thunderstorms, officials reported on Sunday. A cyclonic circulation has formed over the North Andaman Sea and the nearby Myanmar coastline, which is expected to move northward toward the North Bay of Bengal by Monday.

Additionally, the department stated that a low-pressure system is likely to develop in the Northeast Bay of Bengal, near the coasts of Myanmar and Bangladesh, by September 25. This system is expected to intensify into a deep depression in the coming days. "As a result, the onset of Durga Puja is likely to be accompanied by rainfall. Coastal areas, in particular, may experience heavy rain starting from September 25, the day of Chaturthi," said a senior Meteorological Department official.

The official further added that rainfall intensity is expected to increase between September 30 and October 2, coinciding with the key festival days of Ashtami to Dashami. The forecast also predicts light to moderate rains, with thundershowers expected across south Bengal on Monday. Specific warnings have been issued for heavy rains of 1-2 mm in South 24 Parganas, East Midnapore, and West Midnapore on Monday, followed by additional heavy rain in these areas, as well as parts of Bankura on Tuesday.
