Mercedes-Benz's Chakan plant near Pune plant faces pollution probe

The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) has issued a show-cause notice to the luxury car manufacturer Mercedes-Benz for alleged violations of environmental regulations at its Chakan plant near Pune.

The MPCB's action follows a surprise inspection conducted last month by Chairman Siddesh Kadam and other officials. During the inspection, several issues were reportedly identified, including non-functional clarifiers and centrifuge units in the sewage treatment plant, as well as a failure to install emission control devices for diesel engines. The notice states that the company is "not following pollution control rules" and that the sewage treatment plant is not being "properly operated and maintained."

Mercedes-Benz India has acknowledged receiving the notice and has stated that they will study the issues and respond accordingly. They emphasized their commitment to cooperating with government agencies.

This development has raised concerns among environmentalists, especially considering Mercedes-Benz's reputation as a premium brand that often emphasizes sustainability and eco-friendliness in its marketing campaigns. It is to be seen how Mercedes-Benz will address these concerns and steps they will take to rectify the alleged violations.
