Saudi defences shoot down rebel drone near holy city of Mecca
Saudi air defence systems intercepted an incoming hostile drone south of Mecca, marking the first time in history that authorities issued an aerial threat alert over Islam's holiest city. Warning sirens briefly sounded across western provinces, including Mecca, Taif, and Jeddah, while commercial flights headed for Prince Mohammad bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Medina were halted temporarily. Military personnel destroyed the unmanned aircraft before it breached protected airspace, preventing direct ground damage in densely populated pilgrimage corridors.

Regional hostilities escalated sharply following repeated cross-border bombardments throughout the week. Just twenty-four hours prior, incoming projectiles injured 13 individuals on Saudi soil, following an intense assault that wounded 73 people and set regional oil facilities ablaze. Houthi forces also claimed responsibility for deploying swarms of drones and ballistic missiles against King Khalid Airbase in Khamis Mushait, while separate clashes killed eight government soldiers in western Yemen. Speaking for the multinational coalition, Turki Al Maliki called the protection of the Two Holy Mosques a non-negotiable red line that member states will strictly enforce.

Rebel officials dismissed accusations of targeting holy grounds, with political bureau member Hazem al-Assad describing Riyadh's announcement as fabricated rhetoric. Soon after, Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree claimed their units brought down a Saudi F-15 fighter jet over Marib province with a domestic air-to-air missile, accusing Riyadh of carrying out 450 airstrikes. This confrontation reflects broader geopolitical friction reignited in July, when rebels imposed a naval blockade against Saudi vessels near the Red Sea. Qatari envoy Ibrahim Al Hashmi cautioned that disrupting the strategic Bab al-Mandab strait would inflict severe global economic fallout, while United States leadership declined appeals from Riyadh for direct military intervention.
