United States homeland security officials are currently pushing a controversial campaign aimed at undocumented migrants. Under this new initiative, individuals who agree to leave America voluntarily receive complimentary flight tickets back home alongside a generous $2,600 financial bonus. Interestingly, authorities have chosen to use promotional posters featuring famous global landmarks, including India's iconic Taj Mahal, to capture the attention of specific migrant communities.
Officials launched this US self-deportation program under the second Trump administration in 2025. Known formally as Project Homecoming, it provides a structured, federally funded exit route for people residing in the country without legal status. To participate, individuals must download the Customs and Border Protection's CBP Home application. Through this digital platform, users can securely register their intention to depart permanently, submit necessary personal information, and claim their travel assistance alongside the exit bonus.
Reaching Out To Global Communities
Posters advertising this voluntary exit scheme do not just feature the famous Agra monument. Promotional materials also highlight landscapes from Colombia and China, as these nations, along with India, represent massive segments of the undocumented population. Statistics from 2022 indicated that roughly 725,000 undocumented Indian nationals were living in America, making them a primary focus for this targeted campaign. Using a universally recognized symbol of love to promote a policy that many perceive as hostile has sparked intense debate online.
Current administrative policies go far beyond just targeting undocumented individuals. Tighter restrictions and shifting political climates are also negatively affecting legal migrants, including highly skilled Indian professionals holding H-1B visas and Green Cards. There is growing concern over rising incidents of prejudice against these diaspora communities. Meanwhile, former homeland security secretary Kristi Noem recently stated that over 1.5 million people have already utilized similar voluntary departure processes since President Trump returned to office, highlighting the massive, ongoing scale of these immigration crackdowns.
