Baripada, June 6: The long-awaited dream of the people of Mayurbhanj is finally set to become a reality as the new campus of Pandit Raghunath Murmu (PRM) Medical College and Hospital at Rangamatia will be inaugurated on June 8. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi is scheduled to formally dedicate the state-of-the-art medical facility to the public during his visit to Baripada on Monday.

Following the inauguration, all clinical departments currently functioning from the District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) campus will be shifted to the new medical complex. The facility is expected to significantly enhance healthcare services not only for Mayurbhanj district but also for patients from neighboring districts such as Balasore and Keonjhar, as well as adjoining states like Jharkhand and West Bengal.

According to PRM Hospital Superintendent Dr. Ritanjali Behera, the new hospital will have a capacity of 650 beds and offer comprehensive healthcare services, ranging from routine treatment to advanced surgical procedures. The hospital will house 34 major departments and wards equipped with modern infrastructure.

The new campus will also feature fully functional microbiology, pathology and biochemistry laboratories. However, CT scan and MRI services will continue to operate from the existing campus under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) mode, with patients being able to access reports seamlessly.

The integration of the medical college and hospital within the same campus is expected to improve academic efficiency and ensure quicker delivery of healthcare services.

The institution currently has 201 sanctioned teaching and medical posts, including professors, associate professors, assistant professors, senior residents and junior residents. Of these, 48 posts remain vacant and are expected to be filled shortly.

To support patient care, the hospital has a workforce comprising 252 nursing staff, 90 DMLT personnel and 60 DMRT staff. Additionally, the contribution of 125 MBBS students graduating from each batch is expected to strengthen healthcare delivery at the institution.

Established in 2017 as Odisha’s fourth government medical college after years of public demand, PRM Medical College initially started with 100 MBBS seats. The intake capacity has since been increased to 125 seats. Plans are also underway to introduce additional courses, including B.Sc. Nursing, which is expected to further strengthen medical education and healthcare services in the region.
