Bhubaneswar, Sept 22: Bharatiya Police have arrested a 53-year-old man from Rayagada for allegedly cheating a family of Rs 1.13 crore by promising railway jobs to their two sons.

The accused has been identified as Titu alias Rohit Kumar Panda, a native of Gunupur in Rayagada and currently residing in Badagada Brit Colony, Bhubaneswar.

According to the complaint, Rohit and his associates visited the house of complainant Subasini Lenka at Kolathia Satyasai Enclave on June 20. They allegedly claimed to have links with ministers and senior officials and promised railway jobs for her two sons in exchange for Rs 60 lakh each.

The family allegedly paid Rs 1.13 crore by using their savings and borrowing money from relatives. The remaining Rs 7 lakh was to be paid after the jobs were secured.

However, the accused allegedly stopped responding after receiving the money. Later, he reportedly promised to transfer a plot in Padmapur, Rayagada, valued at around Rs 55 lakh, in Subasini’s name and issued five cheques worth Rs 59 lakh for the remaining amount. The land was allegedly not transferred and the cheques bounced.

When the family demanded their money back, Rohit allegedly threatened Subasini and her family with dire consequences.

Subasini subsequently lodged a complaint at Bharatpur Police Station, following which police registered a cheating case and launched an investigation.

Bharatpur police, with assistance from Therubali police outpost in Rayagada, arrested Rohit on Monday. He was produced before a court on Tuesday.
