Kiwis knock the host nation out of the tournament

New Zealand completely shattered the host nation's dreams with a massive 61-run victory at the R Premadasa Stadium. This crushing defeat officially eliminated Sri Lanka from the 2026 T20 World Cup. Despite an incredible atmosphere and a strong start by the local team, the visitors turned the match around in spectacular fashion to defend their total of 168 for 7.

Kiwis fight back brilliantly

Early in the game, Sri Lankan spinners dominated the pitch. Maheesh Theekshana delivered a fantastic spell, quickly reducing the batting side to a worrying 84 for 6. He dismissed key players like Finn Allen, Mark Chapman, and Rachin Ravindra in a rapid burst. However, just when the innings seemed doomed, Mitchell Santner and Cole McConchie launched a brutal counterattack. They smashed 70 runs in the final four overs, building a record-breaking 84-run partnership for the seventh wicket. This explosive finish pushed their total to a highly competitive score.

Fast bowlers strike early

Chasing a challenging target, the home team stumbled immediately. Matt Henry produced a magical opening over, bowling Pathum Nissanka with a beautiful inswinger on the very first ball. He followed up by removing Charith Asalanka shortly after, leaving the batting lineup in deep trouble. Following these early setbacks, the top order went into a defensive shell. They managed a mere 20 runs for the loss of two wickets during the powerplay, marking the lowest six-over score of the entire tournament.

Rachin spins a web

Adapting perfectly to the slow Colombo surface, the visiting captain heavily relied on his slow bowlers. Rachin Ravindra stepped up as the main weapon, ripping through the middle order to claim his best international T20 figures of 4 for 19. The bowling attack utilized five different spin options, relying on pace for just three overs throughout the entire innings. Ultimately, the hosts limped to a disappointing 107 for 8, marking a frustrating end to their campaign in front of a passionate home crowd.
