Bhubaneswar, July 22: Male sterilisation or vasectomy is still not finding acceptability in Odisha despite being one of the easiest, cost effective and safe clinical procedures among all family planning methods.
Low male participation in vasectomy operations is a matter of concern. There is a common perception that such operations render the men weak as they rob them of the virility. Men being the decision makers in the families also compel women to go for tubectomy or female sterilisation operation.
According to Odisha government data, as many as 79,583 women have undergone family planning surgery in 2023-24 while only 1772 men opted for vasectomy.
While highest 307 male undergone vasectomy surgery in Koraput, 282 male vasectomy operations were carried out in Sundargarh, followed by 264 in Rayagada, 169 in Balasore and 110 in Jajpur.
Similarly, only 67 men underwent vasectomy operation in Ganjam district, 56 in Cuttack and 47 in Jagatsinghpur. The male vasectomy number was less than 10 in Sambalpur, Nayagarh, Nuapada, Sonepur districts and none came forward for the operation in Debagarh district.
The data also revealed that 1707 men had undergone the sterilisation surgery in 2022-23 and 1507 in 2021-22.
