Kochi, Aug 27: Ace Malayalam screenwriter and director Ranjith, who faces an FIR following a complaint of "inappropriate behavior" by Bengali actress Sreelekha Mitra, has opted to seek anticipatory bail. The complaint, sent via email late Monday night to the Kochi Police Commissioner, led to the swift registration of the FIR.
Ranjith, formerly Chairman of the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy, resigned from his position on Sunday amid intense pressure from Opposition parties and media scrutiny following the public release of the Hema Committee report, which revealed "rampant sexual abuse" in the Malayalam film industry. Since then, Ranjith has been out of contact, and the situation escalated further with Mitra's complaint coming to light last Monday evening.
In response to the crisis, the Vijayan government has formed a special police team, including four female IPS officers, to investigate both the Hema Committee report and Mitra's complaint. AIG of Police G. Poonkuzhali has been assigned to look into Mitra's allegation, which involves a traumatic incident she reported from 2009, when she visited Ranjith at an apartment in Kochi regarding his film "Paleri Manikyam: Oru Pathirakolapathakathinte Katha," which left her feeling "uncomfortable."
