Ravenshaw University Geography Conclave: Experts Highlight Human Role in Climate Crisis

Scholars discuss climate change impact and artificial intelligence applications

Cuttack: Vital discussions regarding the changing face of the planet took center stage at the historic Ravenshaw University campus today. The Department of Geography launched a comprehensive two-day Ravenshaw University Geography Conclave, bringing together seasoned academicians and budding researchers to debate pressing environmental and social issues.

Inaugurated on February 4, 2026, the event serves as a significant platform for exchanging ideas on how geography intersects with modern technology and human survival.

Focus on the Anthropocene Era

A highlight of the inaugural session was the 4th Brundaban Chandra Memorial lecture, delivered by the distinguished Prof. S. N. Tripathy. Speaking on the critical theme of 'Climate Change and Its Impact on Human Civilisation,' Prof. Tripathy captivated the audience with his insights into the "Anthropocene" era—the current geological age where human activity has been the dominant influence on climate and the environment.

He emphasized a dual reality: while humans are the primary drivers of climate change, they also possess the sole power to curtail it. Prof. Tripathy issued a stern warning that without immediate and appropriate action, civilization faces irreversible damage.

Dignitaries and Proceedings

Prof. Dharmabrata Mohapatra, Chairperson of the P.G. Council, presided over the session and welcomed the gathering, setting a tone of academic rigor. Prof. Sibabrata Das, Head of the Department of Geography, outlined the conclave’s significance, noting its role in fostering high-level research.

The event saw a robust turnout of professionals, faculty members, and students from both Ravenshaw and other institutions. Dr. Binodini Majhi introduced the esteemed guests, while Ms. Rosy Meher delivered the vote of thanks.

Spotlight on Young Researchers

The conclave is not just about lectures; it is a showcase of the next generation of geographers. Over 25 PhD research scholars from the department are scheduled to present their findings through oral and poster presentations.

These sessions cover four critical technical areas:

  • Population dynamics
  • Environmental and climatic change
  • Urbanisation and urban planning
  • Regional development

Beyond traditional geography, the program also includes forward-looking discussions on emerging research tools, specifically the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in geographic studies. This integration of technology and tradition marks a new chapter for the Ravenshaw University Geography Conclave.
