Bhubaneswar, December 8:Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has announced an ex gratia payment of Rs 4 lakh to the family of a college student from Sundargarh district, who tragically died from severe burn injuries at Ispat General Hospital (IGH) in Rourkela earlier on Monday.

The victim, a student at Sarbati Devi Women’s College in Rajgangpur, sustained 90% burns after allegedly setting herself on fire. She had been receiving medical treatment since Friday.

In a statement, the Chief Minister expressed deep sorrow over the unfortunate incident and conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the grieving family. The ex-gratia payment will be disbursed from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund (CMRF).

It is said that the student set herself on fire at her home on December 5 (Friday), allegedly due to continuous harassment by a married man employed as a bus helper. She was immediately taken to IGH in critical condition. The accused was arrested on Saturday evening after an FIR was filed in the case.
