Amritsar, May 13: A tragic incident unfolded in Punjab’s Amritsar district as at least 21 people, many of them daily wage labourers, lost their lives after consuming suspected spurious liquor. Ten others are currently undergoing treatment in the hospital, officials said on Tuesday.
Police have arrested 10 individuals in this connection, including the alleged mastermind behind the illicit liquor racket.
In the wake of the incident, Deputy Superintendent of Police (Majitha) Amolak Singh and the Station House Officer of Majitha police station, Avtar Singh, have been suspended for alleged negligence.
The incident has sparked political outrage, with opposition parties slamming the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government and demanding Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s resignation.
Responding to the criticism, the state government stated that most of those responsible have been apprehended and assured that the strictest possible action will be taken against the culprits.
