Anderson Tendulkar Trophy

A Harmonious Blend of Tributes

The upcoming Test series between India and England, starting on June 20 in Leeds, was initially set to introduce the "Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy," a new honor recognizing two of the game's modern legends. This move, however, involved retiring the "Pataudi Trophy," which has been contested in England since 2007.

In a gesture of deep respect for cricket's heritage, Sachin Tendulkar has reportedly communicated with both the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the ECB. His request was to find a way to continue honoring the late Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi, the iconic former Indian captain who led the team to its first-ever overseas Test series victory in New Zealand in 1967. Reports indicate that ICC Chairman Jay Shah also played a role in ensuring the Pataudi name remains a part of the series.

A New Tradition: The Pataudi Medallion

In response to this request, a new tradition is now being considered. An ECB official was quoted as saying, "Yes, there is a confirmed plan to retain the Pataudi link in the England-India series." The proposed solution is to introduce a medallion named after MAK Pataudi, which will likely be presented to the captain of the winning team at the conclusion of the series. This thoughtful compromise allows for the celebration of both historical significance and contemporary excellence.

James Anderson on the New Honor

Meanwhile, English fast-bowling legend James Anderson has expressed his humility and pride regarding the new trophy. "It's a huge honour. I still can't quite believe it," he said. "Sachin is someone I looked up to when I was growing up... To have this trophy is a huge honour for me, and I couldn't be more proud." Anderson also fondly recalled his experiences playing against India, describing it as the most anticipated series after the Ashes.

This new arrangement ensures that while the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy celebrates two of the sport's modern greats, the legacy of former Indian captain, MAK Pataudi, will also continue to be properly honoured.
