Sambalpur, Feb 7: A 50-year-old lecturer of Naktideul Junior College in Rairakhol was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly sexually assaulting a 17-year-old girl student of the college, police said.
The incident took place on December 24 last year. The arrested lecturer, Sanjeev Kumar Dash, called the victim along with two other students to the laboratory and asked them to help him in cleaning. Later, he asked the two other girls to dump the garbage outside. Meanwhile, he allegedly touched the survivor inappropriately. However, the girl managed to escape and did not attend college for next few days following mental trauma, as per the complaint lodged by the girl’s parents.
The victim left for her native place on December 27 due to vacation and returned to the college on January 4. However, she could not gather courage to attend classes and further wanted to go her home on January 7. She resumed college on January 17 but felt unsafe because of the presence of the lecturer around her, who had allegedly told her that he will be in touch, the complaint stated.
She lodged a written complaint to the college principal on February 2. However, the principal reportedly did not take the complaint seriously following which she narrated the ordeal before her parents.
Her family lodged a complaint at Naktideul police. Police detained the lecturer on Monday and was arrested and forwarded to court on Tuesday following the preliminary investigation. Further investigation into the matter is underway, said Sub-divisional police officer (SDPO), PK Meher.
