Mumbai, Oct 13: Maharashtra's Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Sunday said that police have identified some leads regarding the murder of NCP leader and former state minister Baba Siddique.
Fadnavis, who oversees the state home department, addressed reporters in Gondia district, stating that various aspects of the case are being investigated but details will be shared later.
Siddique, 66, who joined the Ajit Pawar-led NCP in February after leaving the Congress, was ambushed by three assailants outside his son's office in Kher Nagar, Mumbai, where he was shot on Saturday night. He was rushed to Lilavati Hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival.
"This tragic and horrific incident has shocked us all. Baba Siddique was very close to me; we had collaborated for many years," Fadnavis expressed. He added that while leads have emerged, he cannot disclose specifics at this time, emphasizing that the police will reveal information once legal procedures are completed.
A police official reported that they are investigating a viral social media post allegedly from a member of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang claiming responsibility for Siddique's murder.
"We are currently verifying the authenticity of this post," the official noted.
Authorities have launched a comprehensive investigation into Siddique's murder, exploring possibilities such as contract killing, business rivalries, or threats related to a slum rehabilitation project. Police officials suggest the murder may have been premeditated.
