Colombia Secures Opening Win over Uzbekistan

Luis Diaz inspired Colombia to a crucial 3-1 victory over tournament debutants Uzbekistan at Mexico City Stadium this morning. Nestor Lorenzo’s squad took early control of Group K, showing superior tournament pedigree despite a spirited fightback from their Central Asian opponents. Football fans across Odisha, who woke up early to catch the 7:30 AM IST kickoff, witnessed a thrilling encounter filled with spectacular goals.

Daniel Munoz broke the deadlock in the 40th minute. He perfectly timed a run to smash a stunning volley past the goalkeeper, capitalizing on a brilliant lobbed pass from midfielder Jefferson Lerma. Colombia controlled possession comfortably during the entire first half, dictating the tempo and keeping Uzbekistan pinned deep in their own territory.

Uzbekistan fought back fiercely after the halftime break. Eldor Shomurodov initiated a dangerous attack that ultimately led to Abbosbek Fayzullaev heading in a rebound in the 60th minute. This strike marked a historic, first-ever World Cup goal for his proud nation. This sudden equalizer briefly stunned the favored South American side.

Retaliation arrived swiftly, however. Gustavo Puerta intercepted a loose pass near the halfway line just five minutes later and quickly fed Diaz. The dynamic forward shifted his weight and unleashed a precise low drive into the far corner, restoring Colombia's advantage instantly and calming nerves.

Uzbekistan pushed extremely hard for another equalizer as the remaining time ticked down. They pressed forward bravely in search of a miracle, leaving significant gaps in their defensive shape. Second-half substitute Jaminton Campaz exploited this open space deep into stoppage time. He confidently connected with a lofted cross in the 99th minute, heading the ball home to finalize the decisive 3-1 scoreline. This confident victory places Colombia firmly at the top of their group, especially since Portugal dropped unexpected points against DR Congo earlier in the day.
