New Delhi, Dec 28: Senior Congress leaders and party workers gathered at the All India Congress Committee (AICC) headquarters and paid their final respects to former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh after his mortal remains were brought there today morning.
Dr. Singh’s last rites will be performed with full state honors at Nigam Bodh Ghat, a public cremation ground in Delhi, today.
Prominent Congress leaders, including Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Rajya Sabha MP Sonia Gandhi, and MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra reached the party headquarters and paid their heartfelt tributes to the former Prime Minister.
Later, President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh and other BJP leaders also paid final respects to the former Prime Minister at Nigam Bodh Ghat.
Dr. Manmohan Singh, India’s 14th Prime Minister and one of the nation’s most esteemed economists, passed away on Thursday night at the age of 92 at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi.
Hailed as the “architect of India’s economic reforms,” Dr. Singh served as Prime Minister for two consecutive terms, leading the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government from 2004 to 2014.
To commemorate his extraordinary legacy, a seven-day national mourning period has been declared, lasting until January 1, 2025. During this time, the National Flag will be flown at half-mast across the country and at Indian Missions and High Commissions worldwide.
As a tribute, all Central Government offices and CPSUs will observe a half-day holiday.
The Congress Party has also cancelled all official programmes, including its Foundation Day celebrations, during the mourning period. Normal activities will resume on January 3.
