New Delhi, November 3: Lawyers in Delhi, represented by various Bar Associations, have announced a strike on Monday to protest an alleged attack on a Ghaziabad advocate by the police.
This decision, announced on Sunday, underscores the legal fraternity’s outrage over the reported police action, which allegedly occurred under the directive of the District Judge.
Following an emergency meeting held by the Coordination Committee of all bar associations of Delhi, it was unanimously resolved that the legal community would abstain from work on November 4. The statement, issued by Atul Kumar Sharma, Honorary Secretary of the Delhi Bar Association, emphasized unity in demanding accountability. "This heinous act of violence against a member of the bar cannot be tolerated," the statement read, urging widespread participation in the protest.
The incident in Ghaziabad took place on October 29, when lawyers allegedly clashed with the police during a flash protest in the district court complex. Videos circulating online showed police carrying chairs and wielding canes in the courtroom, fueling further outrage among the legal community. Damage was reported to a police post within the court complex, prompting increased security around the District Judge’s court.
A representative from the Bar Council of Uttar Pradesh noted that this incident marked the second recent clash between police and lawyers, following a similar episode in 2023 when lawyers in Hapur were lathi-charged.
As Delhi’s lawyers prepare for a day-long strike, the call for justice echoes across the legal community, drawing attention to a growing tension over alleged police actions against advocates.
