Bhubaneswar, Jan 2: A total of 3,915 birds have been recorded this year in the Mahanadi Ganda region of Satkosia, Angul district, Odisha, according to official reports. The annual bird census, which took place on the 17th and 18th of the month, revealed that birds from 53 different species were spotted in the area.

The census revealed the Large Whistling Duck as the most abundant species, with 1,017 birds counted in the Mahanadi Ganda region. Additionally, two species of cormorants were also sighted during the survey.

Forest officials confirmed that a majority of the birds in the region are migratory, primarily from the Siberian region. These migratory birds typically arrive in the Mahanadi Ganda area during the winter months, seeking a suitable habitat.

Last year, 3,842 birds were recorded in the same area. This year’s data indicates a slight increase in the bird population, which has been verified by the Forest Department.

The census was carried out with the involvement of around 150 forest personnel from three forest divisions.
