Commercial Flights Begin At Navi Mumbai International Airport

Mumbai: A new chapter in India’s aviation history began on December 25, 2025, as the much-awaited Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) officially commenced commercial operations. This greenfield project is set to significantly reduce the air traffic burden on the existing Mumbai airport while boosting connectivity across the region.

Operations kicked off with a celebratory atmosphere as the first commercial flight, operated by IndiGo, touched down from Bengaluru. In keeping with aviation tradition, the aircraft received a grand water cannon salute upon arrival. Shortly after, the airport facilitated its first departure, sending passengers on their way to Hyderabad.

Spectacular Eve of Launch

Before the runway saw its first wheels touch down, the skies above the airport were illuminated by a massive celebration. On the eve of the launch, a synchronized drone show featuring 1,515 drones mesmerized onlookers. These drones formed intricate patterns, including the national lotus bloom and the airport’s new logo, symbolizing the country’s growing capabilities in the aviation sector.

Operational Details and Schedule

Travelers can now book flights with major carriers including IndiGo, Air India Express, Akasa Air, and Star Air. On its opening day, the airport managed approximately 30 domestic flights, marking a smooth start to its schedule.

Currently, the airport operates on a 12-hour window from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm. During this initial phase, the facility is equipped to handle up to 10 aircraft movements every hour. Authorities have announced that round-the-clock operations are expected to begin by February next year as flight frequencies increase.

Ownership and Development

Development of this massive infrastructure project is led by Navi Mumbai International Airport Ltd. The Adani Group holds a majority 74 percent stake in the venture, while the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) retains the remaining 26 percent. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had previously inaugurated the facility on October 8.

Amidst the celebrations, passengers on the maiden flight were seen holding placards requesting that the airport be named after the late socialist leader D.B. Patil, highlighting local sentiments attached to the new hub.
