Kolkata, Oct 9: In the wake of ongoing protests for justice following the tragic death of a woman at R.G. Kar Hospital, a Durga Puja committee in Kolkata has unveiled a powerful statue of Goddess Durga. The statue depicts the goddess covering her face with her palm while a woman’s body lies at her feet, symbolizing the shame and anguish surrounding violence against women.
Organized by the Shri Shri Saraswati & Kali Mata Mandir Parishad in Kankurgachi, the puja is themed 'Lajja' (Shame).
This representation serves as a protest against ongoing violence against women, connecting to horrific incidents in Kamduni and Hanskhali, as well as the recent tragedy that has captured national attention. The spokesperson noted, “Our Durga Puja this year reflects our pain and the demand for justice.”
While the main statue addresses contemporary issues, the committee has maintained the traditional appearance of the goddess at the end of the pandal. They aim to blend cultural heritage with pressing social themes.
For over 40 years, Durga Puja celebrations in Kolkata have highlighted social issues such as violence against women, environmental protection, and human trafficking, using the festival as a platform for awareness and change.
