Bhubaneswar, Jan 13: The Odisha government has given the green signal to a robust five-year integrated conservation plan dedicated to safeguarding and revitalizing Chilika Lake, the largest brackish water lagoon in Asia and a globally renowned ecological hotspot.

The proposal was approved during a high-level review meeting of the Chilika Development Authority (CDA) held under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi. Senior officials, environmental experts, and CDA members attended the meeting to outline priority areas and long-term goals for the lake’s protection.

Chief Minister Majhi described Chilika as a“treasure trove of biodiversity”, emphasizing its significance not only for Odisha but also for the world. He underlined that the lake supports thousands of migratory birds, rare species, rich aquatic life, and sustains the livelihood of local fishing communities. Given its ecological sensitivity, the Chief Minister stressed the urgency of adopting a holistic strategy to ensure its sustainable development.

According to officials, the five-year plan will focus on ecological restoration, rejuvenation of wetland habitats, scientific management of sedimentation, protection of migratory bird zones, and measures to curb illegal encroachments and pollution. Strengthening community participation, promoting eco-tourism, and enhancing disaster resilience for the lagoon are also expected to be key components of the roadmap.

The government aims to integrate modern technology, satellite monitoring, and collaborative research with national and international conservation bodies to enhance the plan’s effectiveness.

With the new conservation blueprint, Odisha hopes to preserve the natural beauty and ecological balance of Chilika Lake while ensuring long-term sustainability for both its environment and dependent communities.
