Paris, Aug 1: True sporting legends put the mass interest ahead of their personal gains. They want the nation to do well at any cost.

Former India soccer captain Sunil Chhetri is known for his commitment, team spirit, excellent skills and most importantly his will to go the extra mile to see India excel in the sports.

He retired from international soccer recently as a player. But when it comes to India doing well in sports and games, Chhetri always seems to be ready to help, or speak the truth.

Recently asked about India's lack of success in the Olympic Games, where a total of 7 medals (in the Tokyo Games) is the country's best tally ever, Chhetri revealed that India fails to nurture talents from grassroots.

Although, we have a population of 150 crore, but we fail to get medals on the global stage because of lack of success in identifying and nurturing talents at the grassroots level, he bluntly pointed out in a recent podcast.

He also pointed out that countries like China, US, Germany, Japan, Australia, Canada - the ones who do well in the Olympics - are miles better than us.

Known for his frank statements, Chhetri said he believes in speaking facts, even if someone kills him for that

That honest opinion speaks volumes about his courage, commitment, integrity  and desperation to see India doing well in sports and games in the global stage.

But will his voice and concern be heard? Will appropriate action be taken to improve India's performance in global sporting events?

Well, seems very unlikely. But sincere sports lovers like him, can only hope for the best.
