Low pressure in Bay of Bengal threatens blockbuster match

Cricket fans across the globe, including millions in Odisha, are anxiously looking at the sky as the high-voltage India vs Pakistan T20 World Cup match approaches. Scheduled for Sunday, February 15, at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, this Group A blockbuster is currently facing a significant weather threat.

Meteorological reports from Sri Lanka indicate that nature might play spoilsport. A low-pressure area is expected to form over the southeastern Bay of Bengal around the same time as the match. This system often brings heavy cloud cover and precipitation, raising concerns about a potential washout or a shortened game.

While the official warning from the Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre suggests rain is likely, other forecasts offer a glimmer of hope. AccuWeather data predicts that showers might occur around 5 PM, which is roughly two hours before the first ball is bowled. However, the forecast for the actual match time remains cloudy but relatively dry, with high humidity and temperatures hovering around 27 degrees Celsius.

Both teams are heading into this contest in excellent form, having won their first two matches. The Men in Blue started their campaign with a tense victory over the USA, saved by a masterclass from Suryakumar Yadav. They followed this up with a massive 93-run win against Namibia in Delhi. Similarly, Pakistan edged past the Netherlands and then secured a convincing win over the USA.

Statistics favor India heavily in this rivalry. In the history of the T20 World Cup, India has defeated Pakistan seven times in eight meetings. The only blemish on this record occurred during the 2021 edition in Dubai.

With both sides aiming to secure early qualification for the Super 8 stage, losing points to rain would be disappointing. Bhubaneswar cricket fans and enthusiasts worldwide are hoping the weather clears up for a full 40 overs of action.
