Bhubaneswar: Karnataka swimmers dominated the proceedings and emerged overall team champion in the 78th Senior National Aquatic Championships, which concluded here at Kalinga Stadium on Thursday.
Karnataka team gathered a total of 311points, while men and women team secured 158 and 153 points respectively. . Both Karnataka swimmers Shoan Ganguly and Dhinidhi Disinghu rewrote two NMR each and were adjudged as the best men and women best swimmers of the championship respectively.
Sohan set two NMR in the men's 200m medley and 400m medley events with 2:04.34 and 4:24.64 sec and similarly, Dhinidhi created NMR in the women’s 100m freestyle and 200m freestyle with 56.78 and 2:02.97 sec.
With 41 medals including 16 gold, 11 silver and 14 bronze medals Karnataka became top of the medal tally. Tamil Nadu 16 medals (8 gold, 5 silver, 3 bronze) and Maharashtra 17 medals (5 gold, 6 silver, 6 bronze) finished second and third respectively.
Altogether 14 NMR was created in the 5-day long championship, being hosted by the Odisha State Swimming Association in association with the Sports and Youth Services Department of Odisha.
On the concluding day, Odisha’s Pratyasa Ray and Mannata Mishra won a bronze and silver medal in the women's 100m butterfly and 100mm breaststroke event with 2:24.77 and 1:15.57 sec respectively.
The host Odisha women swimmers bagged six medals and finished seventh in the medal tally. The state won one gold, 2 silver and three bronze medals.
