Bangalore, June 2: With the ban imposed to release Actor Kamal Haasan’s movie ‘Thug Life’ that was about to be screened on this June 5 , the ace filmstar moved the Karnataka High Court praying an order favouring its early release.
He has awaited directions to ensure the release and screening of his dream film ‘Thug Life in the state.
The move comes amid calls and threats from various pro-Kannada groups demanding a ban on the film over his recent controversial remarks about the origins of the Kannada language.
Speaking at the audio launch of Thug Life in Chennai on May 24, Haasan had stated that “Kannada is born out of Tamil”.
The actor came under fire in Karnataka for claiming that the Kannada language originated from Tamil, a remark that triggered strong opposition in the state.
In his petition before the HC, filed through the Chief Executive Officer of his production company Raaj Kamal Films International, Kamal Haasan has urged the High Court to direct the Karnataka state government, the police department, and film trade bodies not to obstruct the film’s release in any way.
The petition also seeks instructions to the Director General of Police and the City Police Commissioner to ensure adequate security arrangements for the screening.
Worth mentioning, the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC), over the demands from pro-Kannada protesters, banned the release of the film in Karnataka.
The KFCC announced the decision on May 30 following its 24-hour ultimatum to Kamal Haasan to issue a public apology. However, Kamal however, dismissed the KFCC and the protestors’ demands, pleading that he had done nothing wrong.
