Kandhamal, May 2: A sudden Kalbaishakhi struck the Budaguda Panchayat in Daringbadi block, Kandhamal district, causing widespread damage to trees, power infrastructure, and local property.
According to reports, during the storm, two old mango trees near the Budaguda Patkhanda Temple were uprooted by strong winds. The falling trees destroyed two nearby 11 kV electricity poles, completely disrupting the power supply. As a result, residents of five panchayats in the area are currently without electricity.
The storm occurred during the night and was accompanied by heavy rain and strong gusts of wind. Residents had to stay awake together throughout the night, remaining alert and safe inside their homes. Thankfully, no casualties were reported.
By early morning, after the storm subsided, locals found roads blocked by debris, and fruit from mango and jackfruit trees had been destroyed. Several homes also suffered severe damage, with some rooftops torn off entirely.
Residents have raised concerns that until the electricity poles are repaired and power is restored, essential services in the area will remain disrupted. Currently, mobile network and internet services are also down, leaving residents cut off from communication.
Authorities have urged people to remain cautious while repairs are underway and assured that restoration work will begin as soon as possible.
